STORIES

Young people come to CLERC for legal advice, information, referrals and legal service for a wide variety of issues. The following are just a few of their stories.

One young man asked CLERC whether we could help him get enrolled in high school
.
He was fifteen years old, had just left another province where he had been living with his mother and was now living with his father in Calgary. His father was unable to register his son in school. CLERC was able assist with the information and documents and the young man was able to register and attend school that fall, without missing any time.

CLERC's first client was a case of an arranged marriage.
The young woman did not know if she was married and if so, how to get out of it. CLERC's lawyer confirmed that she was she was, indeed, married and annulled the marriage for her. With this legal issue resolved, she was able to reunite with her parents.

CLERC was contacted by a 15 year old who wanted to leave home to escape her alcoholic and abusive father.
She was extremely fearful of him and concerned about whether she was legally allowed to leave her house. Would the police arrest her? Would they arrest her father? Would they lay kidnapping charges against anyone with whom she lived? Would they make her go home if her father sent the police after her? What would happen if she went to live with her mother? A lawyer from CLERC was able to answer all this young woman's legal questions and help her think about what options were available to her. With our assistance, she was able to develop a plan to move to a place of safety, re-enroll in school and work on putting her life back together.

Here's what young people had to say about the difference CLERC made in their lives:

"[CLERC] helped to give me the courage to stand up for my rights. Now the situation has improved -- and I know that the lawyer is only a phone call away for support."

"She was the one I could talk to that would listen. She got me to live with my mom which was really hard to do and she understood what I was telling her."

"It changed my parents, lawyers and judges opinion of our decisions."

"I could talk about anything to someone who was on both sides".

"It made a lot of difference to me because my feelings could get heard in court."
